The Erie Canal separates the City of Tonawanda from the City of North Tonawanda. In addition, the Erie Canal separates Erie County from Niagara County. At the 2000 census, the population of the City of Tonawanda was 16,000, Buffalo 300,000, and Erie County 950,000. Over the years, Tonawanda has lost its industrial roots. The area now thrives as a tourist attraction including the Erie Canal, the historic Riviera Theater, the Hershell Carrousel Factory Museum, the Long Homestead, as well as several waterfront parks overlooking the mighty Niagara River and the Erie Canal. Within the four square mile area of the City of Tonawanda, there are four parks, one pool/wading pool, four sports/recreational areas, 5 miles of trail, a bandshell and nine playgrounds. Various shelters are available for use or rental in Veteran’s Park and Eastern Park. The Clinton Park gazebo and the gazebo behind Tonawanda City Hall are available for weddings or outdoor events.
